Top 3 Tips: How to Create Long-Lasting Change
One of the most demanding questions I’ve come to face in my life is: how do we make changes, for real?
In fact it led me on this path I’m on, today.
For years, I’d personally struggled with painfully difficult patterns (more than worthy of breaking).
A closet smoker.
A prisoner to emotional eating cycles.
A chronic negative self-talker.
A self-denying people-pleaser.
No doubt I’d tried a million and one times to change, but my attempts always backfired.
Go a week without smoking, then go buy a pack.
Follow the healthy eating plan, then binge all weekend.
Promise to practice self-love, to only feel disgusted with the mirror.
In my early 20’s I enrolled in grad school (subconsciously in part to settle my inner turmoil once and for all). I was educated in human cognitive functions and behaviors. I learned about behavior modification, different practices and schools of thought. In fact, Addictions was my absolute favorite topic of study. It fed my yearning desire to solve my biggest inner-struggle to create change… for good.
Yet book studying only brought me so far. I was able to facilitate counseling with others, provide support and space for patients to do their work, but my exhaustive cycles carried on.
To truly CHANGE, you MUST believe these 3 things:
I needed to learn the power of my beliefs- specifically which beliefs needed to be activated and reinforced. My revelation took place YEARS after grad school and my budding professional experiences. It came in the form of my own transformation and understanding of true deep lifestyle change, and was clarified by the articulation of one of my favorite personal development strategists, Tony Robbins (in addition to Jim Rohn, Mel Robbins, James Clear, to name a few).
To truly understand, you need to apply it. But there are 3 key beliefs necessary for long-lasting change:
It MUST change now.
I must change it now.
I CAN change it now.
Let’s break these down 😉:
It MUST change now:
Not “should” change… it MUST change. Go ALL IN with the NEED for new. Turn the dial up on urgency and importance, and create leverage to take action.
I must change it now:
Take full ownership, immediately. Don’t wait for someone else to take action. Don’t wait for something else to happen. Your experience of life is entirely in your hands. It is up to YOU, now.
I CAN change it now:
Know you are fully capable. Tap into your ability to endure massive pressure and adversity. Your strength goes far beyond this! KNOW you are 100% without a doubt able to change. You WILL succeed. The End.
These 3 beliefs are quintessential for long-lasting change. Certainly there are tools, resources, and techniques for change and following through, but without these 3 beliefs you won’t have the solid foundation needed for the commitment to make a true life shift. When we lose the sense of urgency and importance in taking action, it becomes an option that we may choose not to follow through on. Or when we look outside ourselves for action to take place, we surrender our responsibility and fall complacent. Or when we doubt ourselves- getting caught up in “this is too uncomfortable” or “maybe it’s not meant for me”… we let go of the knowing of our deepest powers and capabilities.
I challenge you to test yourself with change you’re ready to take action on. Walk yourself through these 3 beliefs:
It MUST change now.
I must change it now.
I CAN change it now.
