3 Tips to Keep Anxiety Low During Stressful Times
Anxiety Getting to You?
Just two days ago, I had a full blown panic attack. (I rarely have these anymore, but when they hit- it's hell.)
I was just sitting in my office focusing on work, when out of no where:
Absolute terror
Overwhelming panic and doom
My heart raced
My breath shallowed
My vision blurred
I lost sensation in my extremities
"Here we go again..."
About an hour later, I was lying on my bed with my toddler curled up by my side, "Mommy are you all better?"
"Yes baby... I'm much better." And I was.
The fear was gone.
I was back.
Thank goodness it was over.
I now know how to manage these episodes. It's taken 15 years of suffering but I've discovered and mastered powerful tools to manage it. However, in times of overwhelm I still benefit from revisiting the basics.
This is a wild event we're living through; COVID-19 is a world-wide pandemic.
Fear and uncertainty is on the rise for many of us, with all the unknowns and so little in our control. We won't know when things will get back to "normal" and that alone breeds anxiety.
3 Tips to Keep Anxiety Low During Stressful Times:
We don't have much control over this current situation, but we do have control over managing our stress. Share these 3 tips to a loved one to help keep anxiety low during this time:
1) Manage Your Information Flow
Limit the amount of news you are tuning into (limit to once or twice per day from a reliable source). Proactively engage in more positive, productive material like listening to a personal development podcast, reading a self-help book, watching your favorite comedian or tv show, video chatting with a good friend, or plugging into a positive virtual community.
2) Cultivate a Positive Mental Wellness Practice
Engage in something that is mind & soul-soothing like keeping a gratitude journal, praying, crafting, DIY/home projects, creating art, listening to music, dancing, reading, etc.
3) Practice Good Self-Care
Make sure you exercise, eat healthy foods, and sleep an adequate amount at night and avoid staying up late. If possible, prioritize at least 10 minutes of outdoor time each day (even if its cold or yucky)!
