Virtual Therapy- is it any good?
Psychotherapy (counseling) is a professional mental health treatment that aims to improve a person's emotional well-being and coping mechanisms. The purpose of therapy includes:
addressing mental health issues (i.e. anxiety, depression, relationship problems…)
helps individuals develop healthier coping strategies
increases insight into thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
improves communication and interpersonal skills
In order for therapy to work, a trained therapist :
provides a safe and supportive environment for the client to share their experiences.
helps the client explore their thoughts and emotions, and identify patterns that may be contributing to their difficulties.
uses various techniques and supportive interventions (i.e. cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, psychodynamic strategies…)
works collaboratively with the client to set goals and develop an action plan.
A therapeutic relationship is up close and personal.
Due to the nature of connecting with another human and working with emotions, it makes sense why trying to do this virtually on a computer or phone (telehealth) can stir up all sorts of questions.
Mainly: is virtual therapy as effective as in person therapy?
Let’s explore the pros and cons of meeting with a therapist in a virtual setting:
PROS of Virtual Therapy
Convenience and Flexibility
You can attend therapy from the comfort of your own home, office, or even your car (as long as it’s safe and private). No commute means less time and stress.
Accessibility
Virtual sessions make it easier to get care if you live in a rural area, have limited transportation, or have mobility challenges.
Comfort
Many clients feel more relaxed when they can talk from their own couch, wrapped in a blanket, or with a cup of tea nearby.
Consistency
Virtual therapy makes it easier to stay consistent with appointments, even when life gets busy, you’re traveling, or the weather makes it hard to get out.
Opportunity
You can connect with a therapist licensed in your state even if they live hours away, giving you a wider range of professionals to choose from.
Is Virtual Therapy as good as In-Person Therapy?
CONS of Virtual Therapy
Technology Issues
Internet glitches, frozen screens, or dropped calls can interrupt the flow of a session.
Limited Nonverbal Cues
Therapists can still read body language, but some nonverbal communication may be harder to pick up virtually compared to being in the same room.
Screen Fatigue
Some clients feel drained after spending more time on screens, especially if they already work remotely.
Privacy Concerns
If you live with others, finding a quiet and private space to talk openly could be an obstacle.
Not Ideal for Every Situation
Virtual therapy may not be suitable for clients in crisis, acute symptoms requiring high levels of care, those without a safe home environment, or individuals who strongly prefer in-person interaction.
The short answer- Yes (if it’s right for you).
Virtual therapy sessions can provide a safe and supportive environment for the client to build a strong bond with an excellent therapist, share their experiences, explore thoughts and emotions, identify patterns, increase insight into behaviors and beliefs and develop healthier coping strategies. While there are no doubt limitations to meeting virtually for therapy sessions, and it is not a good fit for everyone, the accessibility of virtual therapy has broken down many barriers to receiving consistent continuing care. The key here is to find what works best for you.
